Wendy Hedberg
Director of Volleyball Operations

After 29 successful seasons as SIUE’s head women’s basketball coach, Wendy Hedberg announced the 2007-2008 season would be her final season as the Cougars’ head coach. But that didn’t stop Hedberg from making the move to help out the volleyball program. Hedberg serves as the Director of Volleyball Operations under Coach Gober.

In 29 seasons of basketball, Hedberg posted a 470-361 record. Five of Hedberg’s teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament (1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2007).

That includes the 2006-2007 season when SIUE eclipsed the 20-win mark and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hedberg coached not only the school’s leading scorer and three-time All-American Misi Clark (1997-2001) but also four other Cougars who earned All-American honors -- Lori Sebastian (1990-91), LeAnn Bryan (1993-94), Kim Lowe (1998-99), and Amber Shelton (2006-2008).

A native of Arlington Heights, Ill., Hedberg attended Hersey High School. Hedberg continued her education at Western Illinois University (WIU), where she was an All-American shortstop on the softball team and a standout on the basketball court. Hedberg was recognized for her achievements at WIU as she was named to the Western Illinois Hall of Fame.

Hedberg graduated from WIU in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She also received a master’s with a specialization in athletic training from Indiana State.
